Ksharasutra care
A traditional Ayurvedic para-surgical technique using a medicated thread, used for fistula, haemorrhoids and fissure, and carried out only under trained supervision.
What Ksharasutra is
Ksharasutra is a traditional Ayurvedic para-surgical technique that uses a medicated thread. It is most established for certain ano-rectal conditions, and is performed only by practitioners trained in the technique.
Conditions it is used for
These are the conditions Ksharasutra is traditionally used for. Listing a condition here means it can be assessed — not that the technique is suitable for every case of it.
Anal fistula (Bhagandara)
A small tunnel that forms between the bowel end and the skin near the anus. This is the condition Ksharasutra is most established for.
Haemorrhoids, or piles (Arsha)
Swollen blood vessels in or around the anus, which can cause discomfort, itching or bleeding.
Anal fissure (Parikartika)
A small tear in the lining of the anus, often causing pain during or after passing stool.
These conditions are common and treatable, but they do need proper assessment. If you have bleeding, a change in bowel habit, or pain that is new or worsening, please have it evaluated rather than waiting — that applies whichever kind of care you go on to choose.
Its traditional context
The technique has a long history within Ayurvedic surgical practice (Shalya Tantra) and remains in use in Ayurvedic hospitals and clinics today.
Dr. Sabina's training
Dr. Sabina completed Ksharasutra training at AMDRF, Nepal, alongside her BAMS from the Institute of Medicine, Tribhuvan University.
What an evaluation involves
An in-person evaluation is required to determine whether this technique is suitable in a particular case. In some cases conventional surgical assessment may also be advised before proceeding. Nothing is decided without that assessment.
Common questions
- What is Ksharasutra?
- Ksharasutra is a traditional Ayurvedic para-surgical technique using a medicated thread. It is used for anal fistula, haemorrhoids (piles) and fissure, and is carried out only under trained supervision.
- How do I know if Ksharasutra is suitable for me?
- Suitability is determined during an in-person evaluation. In some cases conventional surgical assessment may also be advised before proceeding.
- Which conditions is Ksharasutra used for?
- Anal fistula (Bhagandara), haemorrhoids or piles (Arsha), and anal fissure (Parikartika). It is most established for fistula. Whether it is suitable for a particular case is determined at an in-person evaluation.
- I am embarrassed to come in about this. Is that normal?
- Very. These conditions are common and Dr. Sabina sees them routinely. Consultations are private and unhurried. Delaying assessment tends to make these problems harder to manage, not easier.
- When should I get checked urgently?
- Please seek prompt conventional medical assessment if you have heavy or persistent bleeding, severe pain, fever alongside swelling, or a lasting change in your bowel habit. These need evaluation to rule out other causes, whichever kind of care you go on to choose.
